How to Buy Cotton Bed Sheets

Whether they are made of all cotton or a blend, cotton bed sheets share numerous advantages but differ in many ways. Read the following steps for advice on how to buy cotton bed sheets.

  1. First: Thread count

Examine the thread count listed on the package. This number refers to the amount of threads in the weave per square inch of material. This weave pattern actually is visible when looking at cotton bed sheets with smaller thread counts; with higher thread counts, the weave is tight enough for the appearance of a smooth surface. Cotton fabrics with high thread counts are sleek, soft and durable.

  2. Second: Texture

Sateen bed sheets feature four different threads interwoven with one. While not as sturdy as the conventional cotton weave, sateen sheets are characterized by their special sheen and sumptuous feel. Damask or Jacquard bed sheets are distinguished by their ornate weave designs, yielding a contrast between supple textures and coarser comfort. Egyptian cotton, supima cotton or pima cotton are the finest quality cotton bed sheets on the market. Even if they have the same thread count as other fabrics, their textures are superior.

  3. Third: Thickness

For the thickest in cotton bed sheets, flannel is the ideal choice. Flannel offers a special kind of comfort, especially in cold weather. With flannel bed sheets, thread count is not as important as the material's weight; look for quality in ounces and not in thread count.

  4. Fourth: Size

Make sure you select the appropriate size of sheets to fit your bed. Bed sheets are sold in sizes from standard twin all the way up to California king. Remember that pillow top mattresses or beds covered with a topper require deep pocket bed sheets. Pillowcases are included in most bed sheet sets, with a single pillowcase for twin bed sheets and two pillowcases for larger sheet sizes.
