How to Choose Adult Bed Sizes

Consider this handy guide for how to choose adult bed sizes. When the time comes to purchase a bed, one of the first things to consider is which size bed to get as many sizes are available: twin, extra-long twin, full, queen, king and California king.

  1. First: See how many are sleeping in the bed

Is the bed for one person or two? If the bed is for a single person, a twin size bed is sufficient. If a husband and wife are going to share the bed, a twin size bed is too small. Also, if they have (or plan to have) children or pets who share their bed from time to time, a larger bed is definitely a wise investment.

  2. Second: Consider the size of those using the bed

A small person is generally quite content in a twin size bed, but a person who is very tall needs a larger bed. Check out an extra-long twin or even a full or queen size bed.

  3. Third: Consider your sleeping style

Some people curl up and sleep in one position all night long, while others spread out and/or toss and turn throughout the night. A twin bed is suitable if you do not thrash around much at night, but if you are more of a restless sleeper, you need a larger bed. Even if you do not thrash around too much, lots of space to sleep in is always nice as you do not worry about someone else encroaching on your space.

  4. Fourth: Consider the amount of space available

If the bedroom is very small, choose a bed that fits into the room and is comfortable enough for your needs. Leave enough room for your other furniture and for you to walk around in the room comfortably. Also consider how to get the bed in and out of the room. Check that doorways and halls are wide enough to accommodate the size of bed that you purchase.
