How to Make a Bed

A properly made bed adds essential appeal, reduces the level of allergens and provides the final touch to a well-kept bedroom. To learn how to make a bed, follow these steps.
First: The clean-up
Start by removing the dirty bed linens. Take off each item of bedding - begin with the bedspread, followed by the bed sheets and finally the pillowcases. Launder the bedding items following the instructions provided on the product tags. Avoid using too much fabric softener for those with skin sensitivities.
Second: The fitted bed sheet
Tuck the fitted bed sheet securely beneath each edge of the bed's mattress. For deep pocket bed sheets, an extra pair of hands may be needed. For best results, start with the mattress corners by the foot of the bed and proceed to the head.
Third: The flat bed sheet
Place the flat bed sheet across the bed evenly, with the ends draping just beneath the mattress edge. Lift up on the mattress at the bottom end, simultaneously tucking under the mattress your flat bed sheet. For crisp hospital corners, position yourself by the bed's right side by the foot. Grasp the sheet corner and pull it in a diagonal direction. With the sheet grasped by your right hand, bring it toward the edge of your bed, anchoring it beneath and forming a crease running diagonally across the mattress. Perform the same steps with the opposite side.
Fourth: The bedspread
Smooth your bedspread out on top of the flat bed sheet, allowing the edges to fall evenly at each side. Make sure the draping end at the foot of the bed is even. Pull the bedspread taut to remove any wrinkles. Check that the top of your bedspread lines up with the mattress top and that no sheets are sticking out of the bedspread.
Fifth: Pillowcases
Replace your clean pillowcases over the bed pillows, fluffing them up to ensure plumpness. Fold down the top edge of your bedding in a straight and tight line. Put the bed pillows on top of your flat bed sheet, and replace the bedspread to cover your pillows for a perfectly made up bed.
